What's a Blue Train?

Blue Train Design is inspired by John Coltrane’s Blue Train album. Improvisation requires preparation. Coltrane had all the technical skills of music as a saxophone player and band leader, allowing him to drive his creativity to the outer reaches of performance and push his fellow bandmates to produce innovative, compelling jazz.

At Blue Train Design, Edmund Neuhaus brings the technical skills of DTx product development, clinical expertise, innovative processes, leadership, and management to your company context, to solve your problems, and create value with you!

Edmund Neuhaus solves problems to make mental healthcare better. As Principal of Blue Train Design Consulting, a Behavioral Health Innovator, and a Clinical Psychologist, he has a proven track record of converging technology with human capital to deliver effective treatment with broad access. A culture builder and effective manager, he gets results through collaborative action, tenacity, and tapping into his teams’ intrinsic motivation.

With digital technologies emerging in healthcare in the mid-2000s, Edmund Neuhaus began his trajectory to improve mental healthcare through scalable solutions. He founded an eLearning start-up offering a hybrid of online therapist training with wrap-around in-person training—evidenced-based training for evidence-based treatments—with metrics to evaluate competency. As Chief Clinical Officer of a national network of community behavioral health companies, he leveraged digital technologies to standardize EHR processes to assess suicide and clinical risk factors, implement Clinical Decision Support (CDS), and measure treatment outcomes, all of which had eLearning programs to train clinical staff in these processes.

He set his sights on the next frontier, DTx app products using behavior design to maximize engagement and effectiveness of clinical content. He moved into an R&D leadership position in the biotech/ psychedelics industry at atai Life Sciences where he
co-led the program to develop innovative DTx app products for Ketamine and Psychedelic treatments in collaboration with a world-class software development team. His Behavioral Psychedelics model became the North Star to maximize durable behavioral change and relapse prevention.

The Backstory of Technical Skills, Leadership, and Innovation

Edmund Neuhaus CV

This is a career path showing a developmental progression to learn at each phase and broaden his foundation to develop new products and services, using both his technical skills and creativity. He knows the importance of creating opportunity out of adversity.

Starting his career at McLean Hospital/ Harvard Medical School, Edmund Neuhaus did every job a psychologist could do in inpatient psychiatry, partial hospital, residential, intensive outpatient, and outpatient care. He worked his way up by fixing broken programs and emerged as a leader with national recognition in clinical care, teaching, and psychotherapy research. Following his maxim, complacency is the enemy, he walked away from this dream job at McLean and started a new trajectory of converging people and technology to scale up the gold standards of clinical care he established in the teaching hospital environment. First, founding an eLeaning start-up, Atheneum Learning, to train therapists at scale. He negotiated a sole source contract with US Navy Medicine to provide online training to their therapists worldwide. The online program was complemented by in-person trainings for therapists to attain competencies as CBT therapists across the US and in China. He is viewed by his peers as a master clinician and master teacher in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Activation, Mindfulness-Based Treatments, Exposure-based behavioral therapies, and Transdiagnostic approaches for a wide range patients suffering from depression and anxiety, borderline personality disorder, bipolar and psychotic disorders, and dual diagnosis of psychiatric and substance use disorders. The developmental progression continues at Blue Train Design to work with forward-thinking companies and create transformative digital products. Edmund Neuhaus grew up in the suburbs of New York City, lived outside Boston for many years, and now resides in San Diego. He balances his work-life as a part time surfer, bike rider, and skier, an avid reader, and cook for his family.
